Mary Mills Obituary

Mary Jane Mitchell-Mills, born on January 31, 1938, in Clarendon, Arkansas, to Ivory Mitchell and Lu Ella Moore. She was the eldest of 18 children. Her early years were spent with her grandmother, Mary Love, in Tullahassee, Oklahoma, where she attended Carter G. Woodson School. It was there that her exceptional oratory skills were honed, leading her to win numerous speaking contests. Mary later married James A. Flemmons and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their union was blessed with six children. As a devoted mother, she nurtured her children's faith and talents at New Hope Baptist Church, where her extraordinary singing voice was discovered. Despite offers to sing professionally, Mary chose to focus on raising her children, ensuring they were active in church, participating in plays, speeches, and choir, under her direction as choir leader. In 1972, seeking proximity to her father, Mary relocated to Marion, Indiana. She became a vibrant member of New Light Baptist Church and later, alongside her father, the late Reverend Ivory Mitchell, helped establish Grace Missionary Baptist Church in their living room. Mary's passion was evident in her work with children's programs and as a choir director, where she shared her love for singing with many. Mary's generosity and warmth made her a matriarch to all, providing a safe haven for anyone in need. Her kitchen was a place of nourishment for both body and soul, filled with food, spiritual wisdom, and song. Professionally, Mary dedicated 20 years to St. John Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and retired from Marion School District's Transportation Department, where she had been a vital part of the community. Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, cherished by her husband, Cleophis James Mills Jr.; children LaJuanda (James) Willard of Denver, CO, James (Joyce) Flemmons of Marion, IN, Samuel (Clara) Flemmons of Marion, IN, Rozalyn (Rick) Jones of Tulsa, OK, Florence (Fred) Pearson of Marion, IN, and LaVonda Mills of MO; goddaughter Elizabeth (Randall) Scott; six brothers, Rev. Ivory Lee Mitchell of Brinkley, AR, Rev. Benjamin Ivory Mitchell III of Fort Wayne, IN, A.T. She was preceded in death by her mother Lu Ella Moore, her father Reverend Ivory Mitchell, her daughter Carolyn Elaine Renfro, a very special mother-aunt aka big sister little sister Beatrice Mitchell McCall, brothers Carl Mitchell, Reverend Larry D. Mitchell, and Michael Mitchell, sisters Verleen Mayo, LaEunice Wilson, Betty Mayo, and Jean Bremby, her first husband James A.
